Find out how much you spend on cigarettes by using our cost of smoking calculator
Could you save money by swapping your cigarettes for e-cigarettes? It’s true that when most people think swapping smoking for vaping they’re not usually thinking about their finances — most people are thinking about their health or simply see vaping as a more enjoyable alternative. But for a substantial number of smokers, vaping is also a way to save money.
How much money could you save by swapping?
That depends on a couple of different factors. Put the number of cigarettes you smoke each week into the calculator below, as well as the price of a pack of cigarettes, and we’ll calculate how much you could save by swapping.
The cost of smoking calculator
This calculator works by calculating how much you spend on cigarettes each year. It then works out how it would cost you to vape instead. By working out the difference, we can see how much you can save by swapping to e-cigarettes. This calculator assumes that a 10 ml bottle of e-liquid is roughly equivalent to a pack of twenty cigarettes.

Let’s look at an example. Let’s say you are a pack-a-day smoker. If you pay $6.28 per pack (which is the average cost of a pack of cigarettes according to the CDC) then that adds up to a total of $2,292 per year. That doesn’t include the additional costs associated with smoking, such as lost work days due to illness.
How much should you spend on vaping each year?
In contrast, a budget vaping setup is very affordable. Here’s an example of everything that a new budget-conscious vaper might want to buy in their first year of vaping:
- A Vaporesso box mod ($63.95)
- Seventy-five 10ml bottles of Apollo e-liquid ($325)
- Eighteen replacement coils ($23.70)
- Four replacement batteries ($35.80)
That adds up to a total of $448.45 spent on in vaping in a year. Compared to our pack-a-day smoker who spends $2,292 per year, that’s a saving of $1,843.55 every year.
Some vapers enjoy spending a little more on their hobby and will upgrade their box mod every month or so and experiment with different premium e-liquids. Whether you decide to take a budget approach to vaping or treat yourself and spend a little more, many people should find that they end up saving compared to smoking.
How much do disposable e-cigarettes cost?
New to vaping? Many beginners start with a disposable e-cigarette that’s designed to look and feel a little bit like a traditional cigarette. These are easy to use and don’t require much in the way of setup. No refills or recharges needed, simply pop open the packet and puff until it runs dry.
An example of a good e-cigarette for beginners is the NJOY Daily. An NJOY Daily is designed to be equivalent to a pack of cigarettes, so a pack-a-day smoker should theoretically be able to get by on one a day. Each NJOY Daily costs $5.95 (though we sometimes sell them at the promotional price of 10 for $47.95) so the yearly cost of enjoying NJOY would be $2,171.75.
That’s not much cheaper than buying packs of cigarettes, so we do usually recommend that customers move onto a more advanced e-cigarette product, such as a box mod, if they feel comfortable doing so.
