Electric Tobacconist Named a 2020 Top Workplace!

Over here at Electric Tobacconist, we’re on (vape) cloud nine to announce that we’ve been named a 2020 Top Workplace by the Denver Post! Each year, the publication recognizes 150 companies from three different size divisions—large, medium, and small—and then hosts an awards ceremony to reveal the top three workplaces in each division. The annual ceremony usually takes place in May, but this year’s ceremony has been postponed until the fall.

So how does a company become nominated as a top workplace? It all starts with a survey created by an organization called Energage.

Energage is a Certified B Corporation based out of Exton, Pennsylvania. The company has spent the past 14 years studying organizations and measuring employee engagement in order to help businesses not only strengthen their retention and recruitment efforts but also improve the working lives of their employees. Think about it: most of us spend a significant amount of our lives at work, and that time passes by a lot more slowly when we don’t feel excited about what we’re doing. That’s where Energage—a combination of energized and engaged—comes in.

Any company that employs at least 50 people can sign up with Energage to be included in the running to be named a top workplace. Energage then administers a five-minute, 24-question survey that asks employees for their input on their work environment, pay and benefits, senior leadership, and more. Once all the employee feedback has been compiled, Energage compares the survey responses to its metrics and then sends each participating company a summary of the results. Employee feedback determines which companies are selected as the top workplaces, and Energage submits a final list to the Denver Post. This was Electric Tobacconist’s first time participating in the survey, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have made the cut!

We’re grateful to all of our employees who completed the survey, and we recognize that we couldn’t have earned this honor without them. We could tell you why our employees enjoy working here, but wouldn’t you rather hear what they have to say? We thought so, and that’s why we asked them to let us know why they love working at Electric Tobacconist.

One common theme that surfaced among responses was how much Electric Tobacconist has grown in the last several years while still remaining true to its core values. "I started my employment with ET two years ago and have seen the immense growth we have experienced," says one of our e-commerce team members. “We have adapted to industry changes and increased our staff, but, through and through, ET cares about its employees. Going to work every day doesn't feel like work. It feels like congregating with a diverse community coming together to work on a common goal." Krista, a procurement manager, was one of the first employees hired at Electric Tobacconist. When asked why she loved working at Electric Tobacconist, she responded, "Because I have been here since we were a startup with only four employees, I have been able to see the rapid growth over the last three and a half years, and it has been amazing to be a part of it!"

Electric Tobacconist also prides itself on creating a friendly and respectful work environment. Ian, a receiving manager, loves working at Electric Tobacconist because of “the culture of mutual respect” that the company encourages. “No one is ever talked to like they're not important or their ideas don't matter,” he explains. “That takes a lot of stress out of the workplace and makes you feel like you are part of a team." Another one of our e-commerce team members agrees and also points out how much Electric Tobacconist employees care about the work they do: "I love the friendly environment and collaborative atmosphere! Our customer service is top-notch, and we care about the quality of our service and site."

When it comes to priorities, Electric Tobacconist has always put not only its customers but also its employees first. “I am very grateful for the opportunity to work at Electric Tobacconist,” says Mike, a customer care advocate who finds his work “engaging and challenging.” Mike also credits senior leadership with creating a supportive work environment: “Our admins are encouraging, and I have seen the exhaustive work they do to make sure we are supported, happy, and healthy. I can honestly say that this is one of the best jobs I've had and that this company has both staff and customer care rooted deeply in its priorities.”
